REVY (Royal Edward Victualling Yard)

When the Australian colonies federated, they still relied on the Royal Navy for defence. Garden Island was too cramped to accommodate the ships and their stores, so in 1905-6 the Royal Edward Victualling Yard was built on Darling Island, Wharf 18 of Darling Harbour. Designed locally (by Walter Vernon), it had to comply with the Royal Navy’s exact and exacting standards. The result is a red brick warehouse with two wings, one of 6 storeys, the other 5 storeys, joined to an 8 storey water tower. Hardwood columns and bearers support the timber floors. The sprinkler system, and electrically powered lifts, were very modern features at the time. The complex opened in 1907, and in 1911 it was handed over to the new Royal Australian Navy.

In the 1970s naval stores were moved to Zetland, and REVY became an office block. It is currently being refurbished as Revy Apartments.
