Pyrmont Action
Pyrmont Action Inc (PA) formed in 2003 to work with government, other community groups, businesses and workers, to improve the social and physical amenity of the suburb.
Members’ initial focus was inadequate internet services. When a Precinct Committee was vetoed by the Lord Mayor, Pyrmont Action was formed. Elizabeth Elenius was founding Convenor, and remains in that position.
With the election of the Clover Moore Independent Party in Sydney in 2004, PA provided input to the City’s Strategic Plan and many specific plans. The founders hoped to become involved in planning. As the agencies of the City of Sydney and the State proved difficult to engage, however, PA adopted a more modest role, engaging with specific projects as they arise.
They worked with Lend Lease to redesign Waterfront Park and 1 Distillery Drive. PA and the Local Area Command persuaded Council to install a pedestrian crossing at the intersection of John and Harris Streets.
Current projects include
Refurbishing Pyrmont Community Centre;
Redeveloping Maybanke Community Centre;
Creating the Bank Street Public Recreation area;
Improved public transport; and
Integrated development generally.
