Andrew Joseph Kelly
Andrew Joseph Kelly (1854 – 1913), drayman and publican, was born in Dublin and went to sea at a young age. He worked as a wharf labourer in Liverpool and served in the US Navy before he settled in Sydney in 1881, as a wharf labourer. He was active in the Wharf Labourers Union, and took part in the 1882 strike.
Working as a drayman he helped to establish the Trolley and Draymen’s Union. He was President of the union during a strike in 1890. From 1895 to 1899 he was a publican in West Wyalong.
He was a foundation member of the Australian Labor Party and President of the Sydney Trades and Labour Council in 1889. He served as Alderman on the Sydney City Council from 1900 to 1906 and 1909 to 1913. In the Legislative Assembly he represented West Sydney (1891 to 1894), then Denison (1901 to 1904) and Lachlan from 1904 until he died.
